INT. A MOSTLY BARE THEATRE STAGE— EVENING

Whoopi Goldberg sits at a foldout picnic table center stage. There are two folding chairs at the table. Whoopi looks bored incessantly checking her iPhone for the time scribbling on a small stack of black pages in front of her. The time is also clearly displayed on a clock on the upstage wall.

Jeff enters from stage right. Whoopi looks at him, seems very irritated.

JEFF: I’m sorry.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Uh, what time was it we said we were meeting?

JEFF: 07:00

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: And what time is it now.

Jeff looks at the upstage clock.

JEFF: 23:08.

Whoopi Goldberg gathers the scribbled on papers in front of her, straightens them by rapping the bottom edges on the table. Places them neatly stacked on the table and places the pen on top of the stack. She pulls a book from her bag. It has a tattered light blue paper cover with yellow banner at the top. She places the book on the table and rises to make her exit stage left.

JEFF: Are you coming back?

Whoopi Goldberg looks back at Jeff, stands there, pitying him, deciding.

JEFF: Please?

Finally, she points to the book and says…

WHOOPI GOLDBERG:  Page 544. See y’all tomorrow.

Whoopi Goldberg exits.

Jeff sits at the table. He opens the book and turns to page 544. Close shot of chapter title: “Freedom from Bondage.” He looks sad, defeated.

Jeff begins to read.
